Highlights

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS

* Built in 1876 at 93rd & Houston Ave.

* Opened in 1882 - 14 students enrolled

  in a 1 room class

* 4 rooms allocated for high school work

* Became the South Chicago High School

* James H. Bowen on the committee making

  arrangements Lincoln's  funeral

* Bowen & others founded Calumet & Chicago  Canal & Dock Co.

     * In 1875, Bowen instrumental in the region's

  1st steel mill, the Joseph H. Brown Mill

* In 1910 new building built at 2710 E. 89th St.

* Current building built for an enrollment of 1,400

* By mid-1930s student body numbered 4,600

* In 1970, new gym, 30 classrooms, 4 study halls,

  & a 2 story library added

* In 1965, 73% of the senior class went to college

* In 2002, divided into 4 small schools by the

  Chicago High School Redesign Initiative
